Health Class

Tonight at dinner we had a long discussion about health issues.
First son number one was informed he has to get his wisdom teeth out. Oh the joys of teenage-hood. A bit of discussion about that.
Dh just went in for a physical and had a follow-up procedure today (all is A-OK). We spent yesterday helping him prep for it, he fasted for 48 hours and today shared some after effects with us... :)
We talked about it at dinner. We also talked about diabetes and diet. I shared a lot from the Leslie Sansome book I just read (for which I still want to write a quick review.. I loved it!).
She did a great job explaining about how to eat healthy and how diabetes can be brought on. My boys are slim. They are better than me at controlling their diets (they can eat a few chips.. I can't seem to). But there is room for improvement in their diets.
Dad has a background in Pre-med so explained to us exactly how the onslaught of sugar in our systems can kill the cells in the pancreas that produce the insulin. Then the results- diabetes and possibly giving yourself shots the rest of your life.
I think this must have took.
My 12yos started asking what good snacks would be. Now, bear in mind, snacking is one of the joys of their lives. For meals where we do not eat as a family (breakfast, lunch and their snacks if we are eating dinner late that night)- they consider an event. They either read, talk, or play VG. It is fun. And what better accompaniment than chips and lemonade?
So, anyway, we gave son number two some suggestions- pretzels, nuts, fruit, and less sugary drinks.
As dinner ended he informed me is is giving up chips and lemonade and asked his brother if he was with him on this. Oldest son agreed- anything not to be sick. They also plan to work out daily.
Ok... now my dh AND my sons are modeling good health for me.
Pretty cool!
