Nice Civil War Triplet
I am turning into a history buff. Thank goodness. I hear about all the other homescholing moms to whom that happens. Now it is my turn. Here is a nice Civil War triplet.
First is Across Five Aprils.. now one of my all-time favorite historical fiction books.
Next, Caddie Woodlawn:
Both are stories of families who lived in Civil War America.
Each are somewhat removed, viewing the war from the north, at a distance. It played a much bigger role in Across Five Aprils than in Caddie Woodlawn, but there was impact in both. Interesting to hear the life and times of America in the 1860's. And especially how the press operated. (not a lot has changed...)
Lastly, I just listened to a tape of excerpts from The Civil War by Ward and Burns.
It got into the nitty-gritty- the generals, the battles, the causes of the war and the resoluation. Wonderful analogies to what is happening still today in politics, press, prejudice and war.

Thinking, I also got a great shot of the Civil War when I read Gone With the Wind three years ago, and Roots by Alex Haley 6 years ago. Those two books are a nice complement to each other.
I think next I will add on The Red Badge of Courage. I began this a few years ago. I actaully think it might be better now that I have more context behind the war.
