Sonnet Anyone?

My boys' tennis buddy is attending high school and got an assignment to write a sonnet. About love.

This may not come easy for a lot of 15 year old boys, but our friend found a creative angle that inspired him. Thinking about the different ways our kids find that spark to write, I wanted (with his permission) to pass it on.

He used two sources... the Bible and his Ipod. The Bible inspired him with St. Paul's passage from Cornithians (Love is patient, love is kind...) and his Ipod inspired him with the lyrics of some of his favorite (mostly 80's) songs, many about love.

Reading it was fun, as I could hear Lynard Skynard singing "Free Bird" when I stumbled on to that certain line of his sonnet, or Earth Wind and Fire as they sing about a Boogie Wonderland.

It was neat to see our friend take a passion (music) and use it as a muse for his English assignment.

Anyway...without further delay... here is:


English Sonnet

1. Patient and kind; is that what love truly is,
2. Love, can you feel it slipping down your spine
3. Can you feel it mo-ving though your mind
4. All the need to be loved can't be wrong.
5. Love dances in boo-gie won-der-la-nd.
6. I'm about givin' you all my money,
7. and all I want in return is love honey
8. Now kings and queens bow and play for your love.
9. Oh, your love is as free as a bird now
10. This bird you can't cha-nge Lord you can't change
11. Oh this lo-ve, its more than a feeling
12. searching for love twenty-four hours at a time
13. Don't know what the good Lord bred in my bone
14. I'm searchin' for my true love all alone
